Professional legal advice without the solicitor’s price tag
About Family Legal
We provide professional, experienced and affordable legal support across all areas of family law — including arrangements for children, divorce and separation, financial and property settlements, domestic abuse and non-molestation matters, occupation orders, enforcement applications, and cases with an international element.
Our Family Law Consultants
Family Legal is a small, specialist consultancy led by two legally qualified consultants with over 30 years’ combined experience in family law. We provide personal, practical legal advice and support, offering clear, outcome-focused guidance to help clients navigate family law matters with confidence, structure and care.
Our background includes extensive experience within regulated solicitor practice, which allows us to combine the standards and professionalism of a traditional law firm with the flexibility and affordability of independent consultancy. If your matter needs to progress under the regulated route, the case can be taken forward through LCL Solicitors, who we work with, and our consultants will remain involved under solicitor supervision to ensure consistency and continuity.
Our Fees
We know that cost is an important part of choosing the right help. That’s why we’re completely open about our pricing from the start.
We usually work on an hourly rate, but we’ll give you an estimate for each stage of the work we expect to do and agree this with you in advance. Wherever we can, we’ll offer a flat-rate or fixed-fee option to keep your costs predictable.
Because Family Legal is an independent consultancy, our fees are typically less than half of what you would pay for the same level of personal support through a solicitor’s firm.
Our Hours
Our normal hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 9.00 am – 5.00 pm (excluding public holidays).
We understand that family issues don’t always fit neatly into office hours. While appointments are usually held within these times, we do monitor emails and phone lines regularly and will respond as soon as practicable.
Your Free 20 Minute Consultation
We offer a free, no-obligation initial consultation of up to 20 minutes to discuss your situation, understand your key concerns and outline the options available to you.
This short session allows us to assess how we can best assist you and explain the most cost-effective way forward. It is designed to give you an overview and practical pointers — not a detailed review or full advice — so that you can decide how you wish to proceed.

How We Work
Our Work
At Family Legal, we provide professional, hands-on legal advice and support to individuals managing their own family law matters.
Our service, generally known as McKenzie Friend assistance, offers you the same level of care, preparation and attention to detail you would expect from a solicitor — but at a far more accessible cost. We assist with every practical stage of your case:
-
explaining the legal process and helping you plan the next steps for your case;
-
discussing your options and strategy for upcoming hearings or negotiations;
-
assisting you to draft formal documents, applications and statements;
-
suggesting clear and effective wording for correspondence with the court or the other side;
-
helping you gather and organise evidence and bundles; and
-
attending hearings with you — in person or online — to provide support and advice and assist you to engage in appropriate discussions with the other side
You remain in control of your case at all times, while knowing that everything you do is prepared and guided with the same professionalism, structure and legal precision that ensures your steps are compliant, strategic and sound.
Formal Representation via LCL Solicitors
Most clients achieve excellent results through our independent assistance. If your matter develops to require formal solicitor representation — for example, where court rules require a solicitor to be formally on record or where advocacy rights are needed — we can arrange for your case to continue through LCL Solicitors, a fully regulated law firm with whom we work closely.
At that stage, you would instruct LCL Solicitors directly for the regulated aspects, while we continue assisting on the case within their supervised framework to maintain continuity and support.
This seamless structure allows you to benefit from our ongoing involvement and familiarity with your matter, alongside the protection and authority of a regulated solicitor’s representation.
With over 30 years’ combined experience in family law, we’ve built a reputation for straightforward advice and genuine care. We believe in clear communication, realistic guidance and professional support you can rely on.

Despite meeting in less than ideal circumstances it was a real pleasure to meet John. He helped me with a particularly awkward ex relationship matter which required his attendance with me at Court.
